Teachers' Day In The World

In China, showing respect to teachers and their instruction is a sound tradition. As early as the Western Zhou Dynasty (11 BC), the idea of treating one’s teacher as his father had been raised. The celebration of Teachers’ Day aims to give credit for teachers’ contribution to education cause. In 1985, the 9th meeting of 6th NPC Standing Committee reached an agreement on motion of Teachers’ Day by the State Council, and decided to set September 10 as the Teachers’ Day from then on. Then, September 10, 1985 became the first Teachers’ Day in China.


In Taiwan, Teachers’ Day falls on September 28 every year, which is the birthday of Confucius, who was the pioneer of education in ancient China. As early as 1931, National Central University put forwards the concept Teachers’ Day and set it on June 6. Later in 1932, the ministry of education of the Government of the Republic China decided that day as national Teachers’ Day. And then, in 1939, the ministry of education amended August 27, the birthday of Confucius, as Teachers’ Day. After several years’ investigation, experts recalculated the birthday of Confucius and changed it to September 10. Therefore, the Executive office of the Government of the Republic China submitted suggestion to the president to change Teachers’ Day to September 28. Since then, on September 28 every year, temples of Confucius will host fiesta with the grandest ceremonies to express supreme tributes to Confucius; and local governments will host Teachers’ Day Celebration Ceremonies to awards honors to excellent teachers for their contributions to the society.

Before the transfer of sovereignty in 1997, Teachers’ Day in Hong Kong follow the tradition as the Government of the Republic China as September 28. After 1997, Hong Kong change its Teachers’ Day to September 10 in line with the tradition of People’s Republic of China.

Teachers’ Day in Macao follows the tradition of People’s Republic of China as September 10.

Teachers’ Day in Albania falls on March 7 every year, which is just one day before Mother’s Day. On Teachers’ Day, Albania will have one day off.

Teachers’ Day is a holiday in Czech Republic on March 28, which is the birthday of Jan ámos Komensky (Comenius). On this day, students will send flowers to their teachers.

Teachers’ Day in India falls on September 5 to memorize the second president of India, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was also an educator. As a tradition, the teaching load will be under the shoulder of senior students on Teachers’ Day, which can ensure one-day off for teachers.

Teachers’ Day in Latin America falls on September 11, which was selected on the Inter-American Conference on Education hosted in Panama in 1943. This is also the death of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, an Argentina educator.

In many other countries in Latin America, Teachers’ Day will fall on different days in accordance with its own history. In Brazil, Teachers’ Day falls on October 15 every year. In Mexico, Teachers’ Day dated back to September 1917, and later celebrated on May 15 by the State Council started in 1918.

Teachers’ Day in America is the first Tuesday in May, as a one-day off holiday.

In Massachusetts, U.S., Teachers’ Day used to fall on September 11.

Teachers’ Day in Korea falls on May 15, on which students will send carnations to teachers and celebrate the happy day with teachers together.

Teachers’ Day in Singapore falls on September 1, on which all schools in Singapore will be closed. In addition, teachers will celebrate Teachers’ Day together in schools one day before Teachers’ Day.

Teachers’ Day in Malaysia falls on May 16.

Teachers’ Day in Vietnam falls on November 20, on which all schools will be closed. And students will send flowers to their teachers.

Teachers’ Day in Russia falls on October 5. According to the tradition, students in middle schools, vocational schools, colleges and universities will celebrate this day in diverse forms, including sending flowers, organizing parties, playing dramas etc. In addition, major television channels in Russia will broadcast movies and gala for teachers.
